Lewis acids and bases, plus main group chemistry. Get the textbook, it can be reused in the later years.
Teaching Staff:
One word: CRAPTASTIC. You will feel lost in space, better go read the textbook instead....
Assessment Details:
10 % mid term test, 20% lab and 70% final paper. A lot of descriptive questions that ask you to compare the acidity/ basicity between different compounds. You won't even know what to expect for the exam. As mentioned before, cm1111 labs have a fast tempo, you need to know where the apparatus are kept like the back of your hand, just dun hit your head on the fumehoods though....
Overall Experience & Feedback:
Random facts that won’t even come out for final exams. Too bad if you are a chem major, cos this is your essential module.

Do not buy the textbook. Although it gives you more insight, it is USELESS in the exams cause everything is in the lecture notes. I can't stress enough the importance of memorizing EVERYTHING in the lecture notes. Read the module description on what is taught.
Teaching Staff:
Assessment Details:
Do well in your lab and mid term test blah blah blah. Memory work in this module is the key in doing well. Don't be careless like me, I got a B- for one of my lab reports and I pretty much was careless in my final exam (probably lost about 10 marks because of this) and I got a final grade of B+. So basically to do well, don't screw up your lab and memorize your lecture notes. Oh yea, don't think that whatever is tested in the mid-terms won't be tested again in the finals. I made a joke like that before the paper with my friends and it actually came true.
Overall Experience & Feedback:
I have a general dislike for inorganic chemistry at the first place. So doing this module is a chore. Huge amount of content regarding the Group elements and acid/base and redox reactions. Not only that, the test/exams are horrible in terms of content as ANYTHING can be tested which is a pain in the arse. I had to read and re-read the lecture notes thrice to force myself to memorize everything. A/P John Yip hates year ones for some odd reason, so good luck with that. He may be temperamental but he does know a lot of knowledge outside of this module and tends to input them in lectures. Makes you kinda wanna do more inorganic chemistry. Oh yea, you learn a little chinese and history too in this module. – By thelousy

The lecture notes are very brief and he will tell you more during lecture. So if you don't go for lectures, the notes are quite useless. The textbook is helpful for writing lab reports. If you are lost during lecture and wants to catch up, the textbook is useful too. After beefing up the lecture notes with everything he says during lecture, there is quite a bit to memorise.
Teaching Staff:
The lecturer (John Yip) speaks incoherently sometimes and will make you feel lost. Prof Yip will disappear during the break so don't think of asking during the break. But at the end of the lecture, you can find him crowded by a lot of students. Prof Yip looks not very approachable at first impression but it's actually fine to ask him questions. AND he is very very knowledgable.
Assessment Details:
Prof Yip's notes are very brief and he will bring in extra details during lecture time. He seem to remember every single word he says and sets them during the exam and quizes. So be more attentive and copy every of his word as tho it is the bible and you will be fine for exams~
Overall Experience & Feedback:
I realise that some topics are quite relevant to what we learn back in JC such as your lewis acids/bases. The lecturer (Prof Yip) is quite an interesting prof: His sacarcism is always a humour to me.

Easy lah. Just remember all the reactions for all the elements taught, and guarantee confirm plus chop A. Even if you cannot remember all the reactions, the rest of the module is mostly JC stuff, can sleep through.
Teaching Staff:
The lecturer rocks. Damn funny guy, and he knows so much useless and interesting information that keeps the lectures alive. He's very friendly too, don't be scared by him in lectures, go ahead and ask him questions.
Assessment Details:
Same as other CM modules, lab and midterm and finals. lab is the usual anyhow write report, midterms are easy too, since only the first half of the module covered, so only a bit to memorise.
Overall Experience & Feedback:
This module is very easy!!!! About half of everything taught in this module, you should alrdy know from JC or other CM modules. And the lecturer is very funny and cracks many jokes all the time. The lectures are not to be missed!!! Also, he is very knowledgeable, and tells us a lot of interesting facts about this or that chemical or element, or some interesting story and so. Be prepared to answer questions in the lecture.
Of course, the worst thing is as usual the labs, but with good planning and proper preparation, you can finish the full day labs by 2pm or even earlier. The exception is the half-day lab, which is Q/A. But for that lab, just rush through the tests and copy down the observations, or else confirm cannot finish the expt on time.

Some of the concepts taught in CM1101 are repeated, such as atomic structures, and acids and bases. Main group Chemistry is discussed in this module. There are a lot of things to memorise.
Teaching Staff:
I was taught by A/P John Yip. Although he's a smart guy, I just couldn't bring myself to like the way the lectured. It could be really confusing, and he loved to mumble. For tutorial, I was taught by Dr. Sreeni. He's a nice guy, and he likes to tell stories.
Assessment Details:
Final exam: 70%, Mid-term exam: 10%, Laboratory: 20%
Overall Experience & Feedback:
I didn’t really enjoy CM1111 because there were just too much things to memorise. The next module, CM2111, was much better.
